Here's how to replace the folder icon with your photos on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 operating systems without additional software.
All folders on Windows use the same icon so that the only way to distinguish a folder is by its name.
Luckily Microsoft gives us the flexibility to replace the folder icon with the photo or image you want.
Here's how to replace the folder icon with your photos on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 operating systems without additional software.
Stage 1: Turn photos into icons (.ICO)
1. Prepare a square dimension photo less than 1MB and visit this site www.rw-designer.com/image-to-icon.
2. Click Choose File to select the photo that you want to convert to an icon.
3. Choose the icon format based on the operating system, whether it's Windows XP or Windows Vista or above (including Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10). Then click Download.

In addition, if you intend to change photos that are more than 1MB in size, you can use icoconvert.com.
If the photo icon has been downloaded, continue to the next step.
Stage 2: Change the folder icon
1. Right-click on the folder whose icon you want to change, then click Properties.

2. Go to the Customize tab then click Change Icon ...

3. Next, click Browse… to find the icon directory. When you find it, click OK.
Later the folder icon folder will be replaced with the photo you have selected. Dimensions are dynamic so that even if you zoom in, the icon will not show any pixelation or breakage.
Can the icon photo file be deleted?
No, because if you delete it, the folder will return to the original icon. Make sure you save the icon in a safe directory to prevent accidental erasing.
Does Windows have a conversion to icon feature?
The closest is Paint, but its weakness is that it doesn't support transparency like in PNG images.
If interested, just open the photo using Paint, then Save As ... BMP. In the photo name column, provide the suffix. (For example picture.ico). Finally, save and the photo has changed to an icon.
Does the new icon also appear on the Windows 10 tile Start Menu?
Definitely! This makes the folder look compatible with other application icons. You can also change the color of the tile icon to make it more charming.
How is the result? Are you satisfied with the photo-themed folder?
